192. Transformative Lessons from the Summit of Greatness
How live events can inspire growth and transformation
Last week, Michelle and I attended the Summit of Greatness, a self-development conference hosted by Lewis Howes. The event featured incredible speakers like Esther Perel, Dr. Joe Dispenza, David Goggins, and more. To top it off, our friends Harris and Paul rented an eight-person Airbnb so we could all stay together, hang out, and reflect on our insights from the conference.
In this episode, we’ll be sharing key takeaways from some of the speakers and the benefits of attending a conference like this.
My biggest takeaway came from former Navy SEAL David Goggins. Goggins is known for his extreme discipline and extraordinary achievements, such as breaking the pull-up record and running ultra-marathons. As a huge fan of his book Can't Hurt Me, I was already in awe of him, but seeing him speak in person took my admiration to another level.
What impressed me most was Goggins' presence. When he speaks or listens, his mind doesn’t wander. He also doesn’t hold back or excessively worry about how others might feel about his words or actions. This doesn’t make him unkind—on the contrary, he’s incredibly honest, kind-hearted, and authentic.
While Goggins' discipline is something I deeply value, it wasn’t what struck me the most. What truly inspired me was his resolute self-prioritization. During my sabbatical, I’ve been reflecting on my own patterns, and I’ve noticed that my fear of hurting others’ feelings often holds me back from making changes when I feel out of alignment. This shows up especially in my work—feeling guilty about quitting, not picking up extra shifts, and adding patients to my schedule—but also in friendships and relationships.
Through the self-inquiry I’ve done on this break, I realized that I often assume I can handle things emotionally while others can’t. Not only is this belief patronizing, but it also stifles my growth and theirs. Watching David Goggins live his truth, without being swayed by others’ emotions, reminded me how essential it is to embrace authenticity. That inner calmness and clarity comes not from prioritizing gentleness towards others but from having the courage to honor our own alignment.
