189. What If I Get Bored During My Sabbatical?
Harnessing Boredom to Enhance Creativity and Balance
Three people expressed their concerns about boredom during their work breaks to me this week. Hearing these concerns, along with others' well-meaning advice, inspired today’s episode. In it, we discuss the benefits of boredom, the value of running experiments, and how to create a balanced schedule.
ChatGPT: My Scheduling Assistant
Recently, I’ve been using ChatGPT to create my daily schedule, and I think it’s the ultimate life hack. First, I used ChatGPT to help design a sample weekly schedule. As often happens during a sabbatical, I had a long list of things I ideally wanted to accomplish each week. ChatGPT helped organize these into a cohesive plan, generating a bulleted list of all the activities I wanted to include and a sample outline of what each day might look like.
This led to the ultimate game changer: using ChatGPT to craft my daily schedule. What I love about this approach is that I can give ChatGPT vague prompts, and it creates a schedule that inspires me. It’s easy to ask ChatGPT to tweak or add things as needed. Over time, ChatGPT has learned my typical routines and knows to include details like “4 Greenies” (my goal of drinking four large bottles of water) and my usual morning routine.
ChatGPT often includes meals, breaks, and other necessary tasks, which I’ve found incredibly helpful in ensuring I get everything done. Being on a sabbatical involves balancing leisure time with self-discipline to complete the tasks I’ve set for myself. While I usually enjoy manually creating my own schedule, I’ve discovered that ChatGPT does it even better, making it a tool I’m truly loving during my sabbatical.
What tools are you using to help create structure in your sabbatical? How do you feel about boredom during sabbaticals?
