184. Mid-Year Reboot
How To Use a Mid-Year Review To Access Progress and Plan The Rest of The Year
Our friend Karinka gave us the idea to do a mid-year review while we were planning a meeting for our intentional living group. Karinka pointed out that we often look to the future and try to better ourselves, but we don’t usually reflect on how far we have come.
This week, Michelle and I performed a mid-year review using Tim Ferris’ piece entitled “Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a ‘Past Year Review’ Instead” as a framework.
STEPS FOR CONDUCTING A MID-YEAR REVIEW:
On a document/piece of paper, create a positive and negative column
Go through your year week by week. Michelle and I used Google Photos, calendars, Apple Notes, etc to help us recall what happened this year. On your documents place positive events in the positive column and negative events in the negative column.
Review each column and highlight the top 20% most positive events from the positive column. Then highlight the top 20% most negative events from the negative column.
Take note of any patterns you notice in both the positive and negative events.
Plan out your next two weeks to incorporate more of the type of events that make you feel good from the positive column and reduce the number of events from the negative column.
Use these top 20% positive and negative events to structure your schedule for the rest of the year.
Notes from my mid-year review
My favorite events involved being with people I know AND learning something new. CampFI is a great example of this! If you have taken the Sparketype quiz and are a Maven, this might also be true for you!
My two most negative events involved disappointing/hurting people. An example is my last day of work. I remember feeling guilty for leaving and the heartbreak of goodbye. Though I don’t think I can prevent these types of events, being in tune with my own happiness helps me make the right choices more quickly rather than dragging things out.
