147 Seven Habits of a Highly Effective Sabbatical
Practical Tips to Dodge Pitfalls, Maximize Joy, and Transform Your Break into a Lifelong Triumph
Taking a break from work might seem like an easy thing to do, but anyone who has taken a sabbatical can speak to the surprising changes that occur when we leave traditional work.
The Seven Habits of a Highly Effective Sabbatical
Prioritize Quality Sleep Pre-sabbatical I did not have to practice good sleep hygiene habits because I was chronically sleep-deprived and could fall asleep at a moment’s notice. Ironically, being well-rested means I have to be even more strict about practices like- regular wake times, avoiding blue light, avoiding caffeine, etc to ensure I go to sleep on time at night.
A collage my friend made of me during a pre-sabbatical vacation which she captioned “Sammie’s trip through Europe”.
Maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine
Michelle and my favorite forms of exercise are spinning and yoga. We love to get a “healthy” smoothie at Huriyali afterward.
Form a meditative spiritual practice
Foster an Abundance mindset
Practice Self Compassion: Kristen Neff’s book Self Compassion is Michelle and my favorite resource for practicing self-compassion
Limit yourself to 4 Projects: Limit yourself to no more than four projects! We learned this strategy in Charlie Gilkey’s book Start Finishing.
Build Community: Michelle and I have made many friends through friends of friends, meet-up groups, parties at our apartment complex and Bumble BFF. We have been regularly attending these events and now are hosting our own gatherings.
