Sammie and I chat on Build A Wealthy Spirit about one of my favorite topics, Sabbaticals. Specifically, we look at how to plan for a sabbatical.
Taking time off work, whether intentional or not, can be stressful. I know when I transitioned from working full time to my sabbatical, I needed time to transition from the corporate world to planning my own days and enjoying a break.
We have a few things that are important to consider.
First, look at your finances. We have a whole episode on calculating your financial runway for a sabbatical or even to have in an emergency if you lose your job. It’s always important to know how long your money will last you if you don’t have a steady paycheck coming in. This will also how long your sabbatical can be.
Second, identify your blockers. Sammie admitted that her job isn’t bad right now and she believes she won’t find another opportunity like this again. She has a scarcity mindset about her employment. I shared that when I left sales, I could never have imagined my life today. Now I have jobs with people and groups that I didn’t know existed when I initially left the corporate world. I also value different things now versus then.
A final tip is to imagine what you want to do if you have the chance to take a sabbatical. For Sammie, sleep and exercise are at the top of her list. Next, is her favorite activity, cleaning!
A sabbatical is unique to each person, their interest and circumstance. Taking the plunge and leaving your job is hard, but if it’s something you’re considering, we recommend framing it in a way so that you are excited for what’s next in your life.
If you’ve taken a sabbatical, what helped you with the transition?
